About Julie

Julie โ€” or Teacher Jules, as most of her students end up calling her โ€” was born and raised in Britain and lives in Devon, in the south-west of England. She is TEFL certified, and has taught more than 5,000 hours of English online to learners of all ages and abilities from all over the world.

Alongside her English language teaching, she works to the British primary curriculum, which means children learning with her aren't just picking up vocabulary โ€” they're following the same structure and expectations a child in a British primary school would.

What she is genuinely good at, though, is the nervous ones. Children who freeze. Children who have decided, somewhere along the way, that speaking English in front of someone is a test they're going to fail.

"One of my greatest joys is seeing a student go from someone who's really shy to someone who's actually holding a proper English conversation with me."

Her approach is calm, gentle and approachable โ€” her own three words โ€” but the lessons themselves are lively. There is talking, and often singing, games, and a good deal of laughter. She works on the principle that children learn more when they are happy and relaxed, while keeping enough structure that real learning is happening underneath the fun.

And the first thing she tells every new student is that mistakes are fine. She corrects gently, because she believes that's how children actually learn, and she makes a point of finding something to praise in every lesson.

Who Julie Works Best With

Every teacher has a strength. These are hers.

๐Ÿ’ฌ

Children Who Are Nervous to Speak

Her strongest suit. Children who understand English but won't risk saying it out loud โ€” Julie is unhurried, never puts a child on the spot, and lets a silence sit until they're ready to fill it.

๐ŸŒฑ

Very First Words

Children starting from nothing at all. Songs, games, repetition and a lot of encouragement, so English feels like play long before it feels like a subject.

๐Ÿ“–

British Primary Curriculum

Families who want their child following British primary structure and expectations, not a generic international syllabus โ€” particularly useful if a move to a UK school is on the horizon.

How Julie Teaches

What actually happens in one of her lessons.

First

Mistakes Are Allowed โ€” Said Out Loud

Every new student is told, in the first lesson, that getting things wrong is completely fine. It sounds small. For a child who has been holding back out of fear of embarrassment, it changes everything.

Throughout

Fun, But Structured

Talking, singing, games and laughter โ€” but with a clear plan running underneath. Children learn far more when they're relaxed, and Julie's lessons are built so the two aren't in conflict.

Throughout

Gentle Correction

Errors are corrected, but kindly and in the moment, without stopping the flow of the conversation or making a child feel caught out.

Every Lesson

Something to Be Proud Of

Julie makes a point of finding something genuine to praise in every single session. Not empty encouragement โ€” something specific the child actually did well.

Questions Parents Ask

The things families usually want to know before booking with Julie.

My child is very shy. Will they cope?
This is exactly what Julie is best at, and it's the reason most families are matched with her. She won't put your child on the spot, won't rush a silence, and won't make them speak before they're ready. Plenty of her students say almost nothing in the first session or two โ€” that's normal, and it's fine.
My child has no English at all. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Many of her Early Explorers start from nothing. She works through songs, games, pictures and repetition, so a child doesn't need any English to follow the first lesson.
How long are her lessons, and how often?
Two 30-minute sessions a week โ€” 25 minutes of teaching and a five-minute recap. Two short sessions hold a young child's attention far better than one long one, and they keep English ticking over between lessons rather than being a weekly event.
Group or one-to-one with Julie?
Groups are capped at five, which is small enough that every child speaks in every session. Some children thrive on hearing others try; some genuinely need one-to-one first and move into a group later. Julie will tell you honestly which she thinks after the free assessment โ€” and you can switch at any point.
Will I know how my child is getting on?
Yes. You'll get a short written summary after every session covering what was done and what to work on, plus a fuller progress update each month. If you'd rather talk it through, just ask us and we'll arrange a time with her.
What if my child doesn't take to her?
Then we move you to a different teacher, with no charge, no notice period and no awkwardness. Sometimes a pairing just doesn't click and it's nobody's fault. We'd far rather move a child than have them dread a lesson.
What do we need for a lesson?
A laptop or tablet with a working camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet spot to sit. A few crayons or a favourite toy for show-and-tell are useful for the younger ones. For the first few sessions it helps to have a grown-up nearby.
