About Ms Lucinda

Lucinda is a British teacher based in Devon. She holds a BA (Hons) in English from Falmouth College of Arts and a Master's in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies, awarded with Distinction โ€” so she comes to teaching English with a genuine background in the language and in academic writing.

Her teaching qualification is a CTEFL from Via Lingua in Madrid: 120 hours of on-site tuition with an assessed teaching practicum, meaning she was observed teaching real students at a range of levels before she was certified. She is also trained in safeguarding to Level 4, Prevent trained, and holds a Level 2 qualification in Caring for Children and Young People.

Most recently she spent two years tutoring for Devon County Council, working one-to-one with children who have special educational needs and with young people who had been permanently excluded from mainstream school. That work covered GCSE English Language and Literature and Functional Skills โ€” and, just as importantly, helping students work out what came next.

"Some students arrive certain they're bad at English. Usually they're not. They've just never had the space to be wrong in front of someone patient."

Before that she taught English online to learners across a wide range of ages and levels, and began her teaching career in Seoul, working with students from primary age through to eighteen. She has also worked as a private live-in English tutor for a family overseas, teaching a teenager one-to-one in reading comprehension, writing and conversation.

At SpeakBrit she teaches across our Senior Academy and both teen programmes โ€” ages 10 through to 18. That span suits her: it covers the stage where English shifts from everyday conversation into structured writing and argument, right through to GCSE-level analysis, personal statements and the academic English universities expect. It is the same ground she covered tutoring for Devon County Council.

She is also the person we turn to when a student needs extra patience, whether that's a diagnosed additional need, a difficult time at school, or simply a quiet learner who hasn't yet found their voice.

Who Ms Lucinda Works Best With

Every teacher has a strength. These are hers.

Additional Needs

Two years tutoring students with SEND for Devon County Council, working in a trauma-informed way. Pace, structure and expectations adapt to the student rather than the other way round.

Students Who've Lost Confidence

Learners who've decided they're "bad at English", often after a knock at school. Lucinda rebuilds the confidence first and the grammar second โ€” in that order, deliberately.

Exam & Academic Writing

A degree in English and two years teaching GCSE English Language and Literature. She takes a student from writing sentences to building a structured argument โ€” and knows what an examiner is looking for.

Questions Parents Ask

The things families usually want to know before booking with Ms Lucinda.

My child has additional needs. Can she help?
This is her particular strength. She spent two years tutoring students with SEND for Devon County Council, working one-to-one and in a trauma-informed way. Tell us what your child needs at the free assessment โ€” including anything that hasn't been formally diagnosed โ€” and she'll adapt pace, structure and expectations around them.
My child has had a difficult time at school. Is that a problem?
Not at all โ€” quite the opposite. Much of her recent teaching has been with young people who found mainstream school hard, including those who had been excluded. She is unusually good at rebuilding a student's belief that they can actually do this.
How long are her lessons, and how often?
It depends on age. Ages 10 to 12 have two 30-minute sessions a week โ€” 25 minutes of teaching and a five-minute recap. Ages 13 to 18 have one full 60-minute session โ€” 50 minutes of teaching and 10 minutes of feedback, which gives enough time to work a real piece of writing through properly.
Can she help with GCSE English?
She spent two years tutoring GCSE English Language and Literature for Devon County Council, so she knows the demands well. What she teaches at SpeakBrit is the English foundation those exams are built on โ€” confident writing, analysis and structure โ€” rather than exam cramming. Many students use it alongside school to get ahead.
Group or one-to-one with Ms Lucinda?
Groups are capped at five, small enough that every student speaks in every session and gets real feedback. Some students need one-to-one first and move into a group once their confidence is up. She'll tell you honestly which she thinks after the free assessment, and you can switch at any point.
Will I know how my child is getting on?
Yes. You'll get a short written summary after every session covering what was done and what to work on, plus a fuller progress update each month. If you'd rather talk it through, ask us and we'll arrange a time.
What if my child doesn't take to her?
Then we move you to a different teacher, with no charge, no notice period and no awkwardness. Sometimes a pairing just doesn't click and it's nobody's fault. We'd far rather move a student than have them dread a lesson.
What do we need for a lesson?
A laptop or tablet with a working camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, a quiet place to sit, and a notebook and pen for written work.
