Ms Caroline

"Most adult learners don't have an English problem. They have a confidence problem wearing an English problem as a disguise."

A British educator with more than twenty years in English language teaching โ€” and a qualification that allows her to train and assess other English educators. Caroline leads our adult programmes.

About Ms Caroline

Caroline has been teaching English for more than twenty years โ€” in Spain, in Sweden, in Austria and in Britain โ€” to learners from complete beginner right through to proficiency level.

She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL at Level 7, the same academic level as a master's degree, from the University of Brighton, and she is currently completing an MA in EAL and TESOL there. She is also a Trinity CertTESOL Trainer, which means she is qualified not just to teach English but to train and assess other English educators โ€” she spent four years delivering a Level 5 educator training course and carrying out educator observations and feedback.

"You already know more English than you think. The work is getting it out of your head and into the room."

Her specialism is exam preparation. She has taught intensive IELTS, FCE and CAE classes for years, worked as lead tutor for IELTS examinations, and set monthly examinations and progress tutorials. If you have a test date and a target score, she has almost certainly prepared someone in exactly your position.

She also has a background most exam tutors don't: several years teaching learners with additional needs, and mentoring students with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. That tends to show up as patience โ€” she is unusually good with adults who have convinced themselves they are bad at languages.

At SpeakBrit, Caroline leads the adult provision. She teaches across Spoken English, General English, Business English and our IELTS pathway, and she sets the academic standard for every adult class we run.

Who Ms Caroline Works Best With

Every educator has a strength. These are hers.

๐ŸŽ“

Exam Candidates

Years of intensive IELTS, FCE and CAE classes, and lead tutor for IELTS examinations. She knows what an examiner is looking for and, just as usefully, what quietly costs candidates marks.

๐Ÿ’ฌ

Adults Who Freeze

You understand English. You read it, you follow films, you get by. Then someone asks a question and it disappears. That gap between what you know and what you can say is the thing she works on.

๐ŸŒฑ

Returners & The Unconfident

Years spent supporting learners with additional needs and students who found learning difficult. If you've decided you're "bad at languages", she has heard it many times and rarely agrees.

How Ms Caroline Teaches

What actually happens in her lessons.

First

She Finds Out Where You Actually Are

Not where a textbook says you should be, and not what your last educator wrote down. Most adults are stronger in some areas than they think and weaker in others โ€” the first job is working out which is which, honestly.

Throughout

Built Around You, Not a Syllabus

Two learners aiming for the same IELTS band often need completely different things. She sets the challenge to the person in front of her rather than working through a course book page by page.

Every Piece of Writing

Feedback You Can Actually Use

Not a score with no explanation. Your writing comes back with specific corrections and the changes that would genuinely move you up a level โ€” so you know what to do differently next time, not just how you did.

Regularly

An Honest Progress Conversation

She holds proper progress reviews rather than vague reassurance. If you're on track, you'll hear it. If your exam date is too soon for your target, you'll hear that too โ€” early enough to do something about it.

Questions Learners Ask

The things people usually want to know before booking with Ms Caroline.

My English is quite good but I can't speak confidently. Can she help?
This is the most common thing adult learners bring us, and it's one of her strengths. Understanding English and producing it under pressure are genuinely different skills. The second is built through practice with someone who won't let you off the hook โ€” but won't embarrass you either.
Can she help me reach a specific IELTS band?
She can prepare you thoroughly โ€” she has taught intensive IELTS classes for years and worked as lead tutor for IELTS examinations. What no honest educator will do is guarantee a score. What she will do is tell you frankly whether your target is realistic in the time you have, which is considerably more useful than a promise.
I need FCE or CAE rather than IELTS. Is that covered?
Yes. She has taught intensive FCE and CAE classes alongside IELTS for years. Mention which exam and which date at your free assessment and we'll build around it.
How long are lessons, and how often?
One 60-minute session a week โ€” 50 minutes of teaching and 10 minutes of review and feedback. A full hour gives enough time to work a real piece of writing or a proper discussion through properly, and one fixed weekly slot is easy to protect around work.
Group or one-to-one?
Groups are capped at six โ€” small enough that you speak every session, and an even number so paired practice works, which matters because the IELTS speaking test is a conversation rather than a presentation. One-to-one is faster if you have a specific deadline. She'll tell you honestly which fits after your free assessment.
I'm in a different time zone. Does that work?
Yes โ€” most of our adult learners are outside the UK. Tell us your availability at the assessment and we'll find a slot that works rather than expecting you to fit around UK office hours.
I haven't studied English for years. Is that a problem?
No, and she has taught a great many people in exactly that position. A lot of adults are surprised how much is still there once they start using it again. The free assessment establishes where you actually are, and we start from there rather than from where a textbook says you should be.
